Sounds of the Heart
Korean words for what the heart feels and sounds like.
Korean has one of the richest systems of sound-symbolic words in any language. Where English might say “my heart is pounding,” Korean offers an entire palette: 두근두근, 쿵쾅쿵쾅, 콩닥콩닥 — each capturing a subtly different shade of feeling.
Sounds of the Heart is a collection inspired by these untranslatable expressions — the onomatopoeia and mimetic words that describe emotions Korean speakers feel in their bones. Each design is a word that says more than its translation ever could.
